RUBANDA UGANDA: Territorial police in Rubanda District have arrested six suspects during an intelligence-led night operation targeting criminal hotspots in Rubanda Town Council.
The operation was conducted in the early hours of Sunday, May 3, 2026, between midnight and 5:00am. It was led by the District Police Commander, SP JB Tumwebaze, together with officers from CPS Rubanda.
Police said the suspects had been on security watch lists, while some are ex-convicts. Those arrested were identified as Namanya Joel, Mucunguzi Anobed, Ahimbisibwe Bruno, Agaba William, Mugisha Erias, and Akankwasa Brian.
According to police, the crackdown follows increasing reports of aggravated robberies in which gangs armed with machetes, knives, and stones ambush late-night travellers and rob them of their valuables.
The suspects are currently detained at CPS Rubanda pending further investigations and possible identification by victims.
Among the reported victims is Eng Denis Twesigomwe of Rubanda District Local Government, who was allegedly robbed of a bag containing a laptop and UGX 4.9 million while returning from Kampala on February 2, 2026, at around 3:00am.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the arrests and said investigations are ongoing. He added that similar operations will continue across the Kigezi region to curb criminal activities.
