KISORO UGANDA: Kisoro District has launched an intensified campaign to eradicate measles and tuberculosis among children, in a bid to promote healthy growth and prevent life-threatening infections.
Speaking to thelensreports, District Health Educator Valentino Mubangizi revealed that more than 23 people from six parishes across the district tested positive for tuberculosis after samples were analyzed by officials from the Ministry of Health. He attributed the rise in cases to low uptake of the BCG vaccine and inadequate routine medical checkups.
Mubangizi noted that measles cases had previously been on the rise in recent years, but the situation has improved following strengthened interventions. These include extensive vaccination drives and community sensitization efforts, with health workers spending long hours reaching out to families.
He urged parents to take advantage of the ongoing Child Health Days of Integration, targeting children aged 0–2 years, to ensure they receive all necessary immunizations.
Meanwhile, Kisoro Assistant District Health Officer Annet Dusabe emphasized that no child should be left unvaccinated during this exercise. She warned that failure to immunize children increases the risk of disease outbreaks, which can severely affect brain development and overall growth.
