RUBANDA UGANDA: The territorial police in Rubanda District are investigating a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a Senior Six student of Kabale Brainstorm High School, along with another person, and left three others critically injured along the Kabale–Kisoro road.
The crash occurred on 16/05/2026 at around 15:30 hours at Nyakiharo Village, Bubare Parish, Bubare Sub-county in Rubanda District, involving motor vehicle registration number UAJ 098V, a grey Toyota Corolla, and motor vehicle registration number RH 802Q / RL 6749, a Howo truck in white and blue colours.
One of the deceased has been identified as Kiconco Faith, a 20-year-old female resident of Kamuserwa Village in Rubanda Town Council, who was a Senior Six BCM student at Kabale Brainstorm High School. The second deceased is Namukujije Alex, a 33-year-old Rwandan national whose identity was confirmed from documents recovered at the scene.
The injured victims include Mwesigwa Javira, 33, of Bugongi Upper in Kabale Municipality, who was driving the Toyota Corolla, together with two other male occupants who were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.
Preliminary investigations indicate that both vehicles were moving in opposite directions when the Howo truck allegedly failed to negotiate a corner at Nyakiharo Village due to speeding.
The truck is said to have veered into the lane of the oncoming Toyota Corolla, resulting in a head-on collision that claimed the lives of the student and another passenger on the spot and left three others injured.
Police visited and documented the scene, and the injured were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kabale Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, noting that the Toyota Corolla was towed to Rubanda Police Station for inspection while the Howo truck remains at the scene pending towing and mechanical examination.
He added that the truck driver fled the scene and is currently on the run as investigations continue.
