KAMPALA UGANDA: The race for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament has taken a new twist after Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba declared that Uganda is “not ready for corrupt leaders,” intensifying debate on corruption and accountability among top government officials.
His remarks have been interpreted by some observers as part of the growing political tension surrounding Speaker Anita Annet Among.
Gen Muhoozi’s comments come amid rising public criticism over alleged extravagant spending by some political leaders, including reports that Speaker Among recently acquired a Rolls Royce reportedly worth Shs3.4 billion.
For weeks, members within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) had believed that Speaker Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa were likely to retain their positions after receiving endorsement from the party’s Central Executive Committee.
However, Muhoozi’s latest remarks have shifted public attention to corruption and the alleged misuse of public resources by leaders entrusted with serving Ugandans.
In a series of posts on his official X account on Sunday, Muhoozi questioned the luxurious lifestyles of some leaders while millions of Ugandans continue to struggle with poverty, lack of clean water, and unreliable electricity.
“I have been Mzee’s son for 52 years but I have never sat in a Rolls Royce. I don’t think Mzee has sat in one either,” he wrote, referring to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
He added that leaders should prioritize serving citizens rather than personal enrichment.
“Our job is to serve Ugandans, not ourselves. I cannot support corruption. I risked my life to make this country peaceful. Now that it is, it will not be taken by thieves. Never!” he stated.
The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leader further criticized what he described as excessive spending in Parliament, saying that funds allocated to legislators should instead be redirected to support struggling Ugandans.
“PLU believes in the reduction of any monies sent to Parliament. We believe in redirecting that money to the millions of Ugandans living in shacks, without water or electricity,” he said.
Gen Muhoozi also indicated that PLU would support a different candidate for Speaker, arguing that Uganda needs leaders who prioritize service delivery and accountability.
Political observers say his remarks reflect growing public frustration over corruption and lavish spending among political leaders, especially at a time when many Ugandans are facing economic hardship.
His statements have now added fresh uncertainty to the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament, with debate increasingly centered on integrity, accountability, and the fight against corruption in government institutions.
