LIRA UGANDA: Alasa Islamic School in Ireda West Cell, Ireda West Ward, Lira City East Division, has been temporarily closed following a classroom collapse that left several pupils injured.
The closure was recommended by authorities after police confirmed that the school premises are unsafe and pose a serious risk to both learners and staff. The decision is intended to allow for reconstruction in line with approved engineering standards under strict supervision of the City Engineer.
The incident occurred on April 7, 2026, at around 12:50 PM during a Primary Five science lesson. According to the class teacher, Ocen Adam, a loud noise was heard as concrete blocks fell onto the roof and broke through the ceiling. He immediately ordered pupils to evacuate, but more debris continued to fall, injuring several learners in the process.
Two pupils sustained serious injuries, including Mohammed Ahmed (11), who suffered head injuries and nose bleeding, and O’Mara Muntasir (10), who sustained an injury to the left hand. Six other pupils sustained minor injuries and complained of pain.
Police officers from Lira City East Division, led by Divisional Liaison Officer IP Ayepa Michael, responded promptly and conducted a fact-finding visit. Investigations revealed that the affected classroom was poorly constructed, with weak structural support and substandard ceiling installation.
Further inspection showed that another classroom is also at risk of collapse, with a sagging ceiling and visible cracks across the building.
The privately owned primary school, established in 2019 by Bua Aus-Ogwang, accommodates both Somali and indigenous pupils and operates a day section with 18 teachers.
A Scene of Crime Officer documented the scene, and the school director has since been arrested on allegations of a rash and negligent act causing injuries.
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP PJ Okema confirmed the development and emphasized the need to safeguard lives as investigations continue.
